2. Course Objective

The skill of reading drawings is the most important skill for a civil engineer. Without the skill to read and understand drawings, one cannot grasp the structure of the work, the necessary technical requirements for construction technology, and therefore cannot perform quantity takeoff or direct construction on site.

This course is organized by the Faculty of Construction Economics and Management, Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, to equip students with the most basic knowledge and skills in:

  • Interpreting construction design drawings; construction technology and techniques.

  • Quantity takeoff for construction works in accordance with legal regulations and practical professional practices in Vietnam, serving the purpose of managing construction investment costs (preparing cost estimates, payment/final settlement quantities, etc.).

The Faculty of Construction Economics and Management does not issue certificates for this course.

3. Student Level

Suitable for undergraduate students from the third year onwards of the Faculty of Construction Economics and Management, Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, who have studied basic subjects such as Descriptive Geometry, Technical Drawing, Reinforced Concrete, Construction Engineering 1 and 2, and Foundations. Fourth-year students will grasp the content more quickly as they have studied specialized subjects such as Construction Norms, Construction Economics 1 and 2, Construction Product Valuation, etc.

4. Course Content Summary

This course equips students with the knowledge and skills for interpreting construction design drawings in general, focusing on civil engineering projects at the technical design or construction drawing stage.

Students will study and interpret in detail a set of real and highly typical civil engineering design documents, using both printed copies and AutoCAD soft files.

Students will also be equipped with additional knowledge about the construction technology and techniques for key components and elements of civil engineering projects.

Practice listing construction tasks according to the appropriate construction technology and performing quantity takeoff for the main tasks in that list in the most accurate, rapid, and effective way.

In this course, students will also be equipped with the skills to use certain AutoCAD commands and Excel tricks to improve the efficiency and accuracy of quantity takeoff.

5. Student Responsibilities

  • Attend classes, fully prepare required learning tools: laptop with AutoCAD installed (version 2007 or later), Microsoft Office (version 2010 or later); pen and notebook; ...; power strip for charging laptops.

  • Perform operations and practice according to the instructor's guidance.

  • Take notes of important content and complete in-class and homework exercises as required by the instructor.

  • Participate in class discussions under the instructor's guidance.

  • Conduct further research and self-study.

6. Learning Materials$^{[1]}$

  • Lecture slides.

  • Design documents of the practice project used in the course.

  • Other documents and files: sample templates, etc.

7. Duration and Location

  • Duration: 06 sessions; 2.5 hours/session (including a 10–15 minute break).

  • Time: From July 27, 2020 to August 08, 2020 (expected 3 sessions/week: Monday-Wednesday-Friday, from 18:00–20:30).

  • Location: At Hanoi University of Civil Engineering (expected lecture hall 13H2 or 14H2).

8. General Regulations

  • During class time, students must comply with class regulations (no noise, no personal work, no disturbing others).

  • Attendance will be taken at all sessions. The method and time of attendance are random during each session.

  • Students must print the full set of drawings themselves for practice.

  • Students who arrive more than 30 minutes late or do not bring their personal laptop will be considered absent for that session.

9. Student Assessment Criteria

  • Diligence (Chuyên cần): Attendance at class sessions.

  • End-of-Course Exam.

10. Fees

  • For students of the Faculty of Construction Economics and Management, HUCE: The Faculty will cover all costs (free of charge).

  • For students from other Faculties of HUCE and other universities: 100,000 VND/person (for document photocopying fees).

  • Students who require a certificate: The Institute of Construction Investment Management will compile a list; the fee is 100,000 VND/certificate.

Students will be issued a Certificate of Course Completion by the Institute of Construction Investment Management if they:

  • Attend at least 70% of the total sessions;

  • Achieve a passing score on the end-of-course exam.

11. Detailed Course Outline

The course focuses on enhancing students' knowledge and skills in interpreting drawings and quantity takeoff for construction works serving cost management, without detailed content on the system of construction norms, current unit prices, and estimating preparation. The detailed course outline will be sent to students at the opening session.
