Introduction to the Urban Economics and Management Major

The Construction Management Major, specializing in Urban Economics and Management, under the Faculty of Economics and Construction Management, has been offered since 2001. The scale of the program has been gradually increasing as more and more candidates applying to the National University of Civil Engineering are interested in this field. The program meets the growing demand for construction and urban management staff at all levels in the country.

Training Objectives

The program aims to train engineers in Urban Economics and Management with good ethical qualities; solid scientific knowledge in the fields of Economics and Construction Management; professional skills, practical competence, and necessary personal qualities to independently handle situations, solve professional problems, and conduct research creatively; skills to acquire, process, and communicate information; social communication skills needed to work effectively in multidisciplinary and international environments; and the ability to apply IT and foreign languages in professional activities.

The Urban Economics and Management major is suitable for students interested in technical and management sciences. Knowledge of construction techniques, construction technology, construction economics, and urban management is a distinctive advantage of this major, unmatched by any other civil engineering discipline. Additionally, logical thinking, analytical and synthetic skills, communication abilities, and a passion for understanding current events and socio-economic issues are considered advantages when pursuing a career in construction economics and management.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of Urban Economics and Management can:

  • Work in construction management and urban management at state management agencies such as the Ministry of Construction, Ministry of Planning and Investment, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Transport, and urban management departments under provincial and municipal governments, as well as local district, ward, and town authorities.

  • Conduct research at institutes specializing in economics and urban management.

  • Work as managers, bidding officers, or construction site managers in construction companies, real estate investment companies, or urban public service providers such as urban environment companies, water supply companies, drainage companies, and urban landscaping companies.

  • Provide consultancy for project planning and analysis, cost estimation, and bidding services in construction investment consulting companies.

  • Evaluate projects at commercial banks and insurance companies.

  • Manage projects at project management boards and construction project investors.

  • Engage in teaching at educational institutions.

According to program statistics, over 95% of graduates in Urban Management from the National University of Civil Engineering find employment within six months of graduation, with more than 80% working in positions related to their field of study and earning an average income of 10 million VND per month. Around 11% of graduates earn between 10–15 million VND per month.

Further Study Opportunities

Graduates of Urban Economics and Management can easily pursue a second bachelor’s degree in many other majors at the National University of Civil Engineering due to exemption from several courses in the curriculum. After graduation, students can continue to graduate programs at the university to earn a Master’s degree in Construction Management, specializing in Construction Economics, Project Management, or Urban Management.
